If you're like me, you're questioning what happened to summer. It seems like just yesterday that we were thinking about those summer vacations and now, here we are at the start of the new school year.
I read once that time passes much faster for adults because we experience less "firsts." For children, time passes much more slowly because almost everything is a new experience. With that in mind and since we are at the beginning of a new school year, I encourage you to try something new this school year – maybe take up a new hobby, try a new sport, or consider something new in your career.
If you are a little hesitant about trying something new, use these tips to help you decide:
Research the issues. If someone is encouraging you to try something new and it takes you way out of your normal comfort zone, do some research. Is there any reason you shouldn't try the new activity? If there are health issues, financial risks, or ethical concerns, it might not be a good idea. However, for many people, the research provides all the information they needed to know that trying that new thing would be fun or exciting.
Accept imperfection. The first time you try something new whether it's learning a new sport or going to a new job, it won't be without some challenges. You may miss the ball a few times when trying a new sport, or you may not like everything about that new job. However, before you know it, you won't be a newbie.
Imagine life afterward. Whatever the new thing is, it should make you feel like you've accomplished something significant or of at least fulfilling. Think about other benefits might you experience. Could you make some new friends, improve your health, or further your career? Just being able to tell other people that you've tried something may not be enough reason to do something new – especially if the subject never comes up in conversation!
Many people consider the start of a new school year as an opportunity to set some new goals. Think about what you may like to do this school year. . .and hurry! Before you know it, it will be May 2016!
